Discuss as needed at Monday's meeting with Home Depot
TEAMS:
Divide parents into teams to work on the following garden projects:
~Garden beds to help support Home Depot volunteers
~Classroom patio - benches
~Fountain
~Fence
CASH, GARDEN, & GREENHOUSE:
We have $5800 cash in an account; we want to save half of the $ for
benches, tables, etc., to go into our greenhouses once they are set
up. This means we need to limit our expenses at this time to $2600 or
work to raise additional funds for future garden needs. The remaining
$2600 will provide supplies for the greenhouses.
***IDEA TO RAISE $ for garden, greenhouse, future expenses:
Sell commemorative "leaves" to families; can be engraved with family's
name, child's name, etc.
Other ideas to raise $???
T-SHIRTS: $7 x $200 = $1,400.00
We hope to recover our expenses for the t-shirts with families
purchasing shirts and/or donating extra $ to cover the costs of shirts
for children unable to pay for their shirts.
BENCHES: $89 each x 7 = $623.00 (without tax) approximate cost
For our "classroom patio"
We have ordered 5 and need to order 2 more for a total of 7 benches
Jenny talked to Janet White from the Bureau of Reclamation (dept. of
dams, water, land) who is a concrete engineer.
3 options for foundation for benches:
~lay concrete slabs; 1ft deep with rebar; most expensive; weight can
cause these to sink into the ground
~use flagstone; different dimensions that will add interest to our
garden; cheaper than concrete
~use pavers like we will have in our garden
**At this time, we like the idea of flagstone if it is affordable.
FOUNTAIN: $250 (without tax) approximate cost
Needs to be anchored and have connections to water and electricity
Possible base of flagstone; quickrete; chain around base with a chain
hook, bolt, bobby pin to anchor
LIGHT POSTS: $???
No final information on these yet
GARDEN BEDS: Donated by Home Depot
Will be supervised by Home Depot employees who will supervise and
support construction while allowing students to participate on tasks
appropriate for them to support. Garden beds go together like a
puzzle; students may use mallets to pound rebar for corner stakes
FENCE: $??? (without tax) approximate cost
Perimeter is 160 feet.
The fence should be set back 3 feet from the sidewalk.
Vinyl fencing also looks good and is durable; cheaper than Trex
Fence will need approximately 8 posts to secure fence in place.
An electric auger and a manual post hole digger will be needed to dig
holes for posts. Discussed using quickrete for post holes; cheaper
than concrete;
Looked at several fencing products on computer; Veranda "Chelsey"
seems to be our most cost-effective option at this time
Parts of fencing materials needed:
17 3ft x 8ft panels at $? each = $???
8 posts x $?? = $???
4 - 5 ft gates (to create two double gate entrances) x $??? = $???
Still need quickrete, weed barrier, metal edging, and mulch to finish
fencing area.
IRIS BULBS: Donated
Possibly put around fountain; look for additional spaces for bulbs
COMMEMORATIVE ART WORK: ???
Still need to purchase glazes and tiles; Hulstrom art teachers will
help with firing tiles in our school's kiln when tiles are ready for
this process
TRELLIS: ???
OTHER: ???
